Volunteer at Point Sur Lighthouse
Answers to some common questions:

Is there a lot of study involved in the training? Training consists of several evening lectures on a variety of subjects and a few Sunday afternoons at Pt. Sur to practice on site. No memorization or tests are involved. There is no charge for the training and materials are free.

What are the benefits to volunteering? As a California State Parks  volunteer with 50 volunteer hours you will receive an annual pass good for day-use in all Monterey District state parks. A state-wide day-use pass is given to volunteers with 200 volunteer hours. In addition, Pt. Sur volunteers who have completed the docent training course can take family and friends to Pt. Sur on private tours. Volunteers are also invited to other "volunteer only" activities. Training and travel count toward your volunteer hours.

What is the obligation of time? After the training course, volunteers should plan to give at least 12 tours per year. One tour per month is encouraged. Each tour takes about four hours at the park, plus travel time. Volunteers should attend at least four of the six bi-monthly meetings a year, held on the second Monday evening of alternate months.

How do you schedule your tours? Volunteers sign-up for tours on-line, at the meetings or by calling the volunteer scheduler.

Who are the volunteers? Volunteers are from all walks of life and are all ages (adults). Their common interest is the out-of-doors, history, lighthouses, or just the fun of meeting people from all over the world on our tours.

See our training schedule for the complete schedule of classes. Other lectures held during the year as special events or at our bi-monthly meeting.

If you like being with great people in a great place, consider becoming a Pt. Sur volunteer. Volunteers lead tours, operate the Visitors Center, help preserve and maintain Pt. Sur's historic buildings, and are an integral part of Pt. Sur's operations.
